Support and Learning for Children Under 6 Years of Age
Part of the Ajyal R.I.S.E. Programme
As part of Ajyal’s COVID-19 response plan and in line with the Foundation’s R.I.S.E Programme which aims to improve access to high quality education for Palestinians, Ajyal and its Ramallah-based partner have developed a Support and Learning Pack for Parents and Kindergarten Staff. The Support Pack will provide long-term support (beyond the current pandemic) to address challenges in early childhood education that pre-existed the pandemic. The Support Pack seeks to address the psychological, social and educational needs and the impact of the pandemic and other crises on children aged 6 and under–– the majority of whom do not receive formal education and support.
It also aims to improve the quality of early childhood education (ECE) provided to children at the kindergarten level. The ECE in Palestine is under-developed and the majority of staff in the kindergarten sector have no formal qualification. The project will benefit kindergartens by a) providing a Support and Learning Pack that adopts interactive curricula, b) training staff managers in the kindergartens on skills and tools adequate for working with children at this critical age; and c) offering awareness-raising activities for parents and kindergarten teachers in methods of learning and interaction with children at home and in the kindergarten environment.
The project has 3 target groups: 1) parents with children under 6 years of age at home, 2) kindergarten/nursery teachers and staff and 3) the children that they support. The Support Pack's top priority is to ensure that these children are given the emotional resilience to develop healthily throughout the pandemic and beyond, by providing guidance and tools for parents while they support their young children at home, and for staff while they support children in kindergartens. It also aims to stimulate the imagination of the child, build foundations for literacy, numeracy, and life skills, all whilst using fun activities specifically designed for this age group. The content of the Support Pack will be modified accordingly for parents and kindergarten staff to ensure that it is accessible and meets the needs of both groups. In the Palestinian context of occupation and the routine disruptions to normal life, this project will provide regular guidance for parents and kindergarten staff.
