The Issue

Picture
Despite the high enrolment rates of Palestinian girls and boys in education, outcomes remain poor. Palestinian students are amongst the lowest performers on the TIMMS (the international benchmark for education evaluation). While Palestinian parents take pride in educating their children, it is evident that the challenges of the current education system is failing the next generation. The Palestinian economy is critically undermined due to decades of occupation and restrictions. Gaza possesses the highest poverty indicators in the world. The rights of Palestinians are infringed upon daily in almost every aspect of life.

The Solution

Access to poor quality education is almost like receiving  no education. Poor educational outcomes at primary level leads to poor performance at secondary and tertiary levels of education. Therefore, access to quality education is essential, starting from early years and continuing throughout all levels of education.

While it remains extremely challenging to improve the overall situation in Palestine and for its diaspora without a lasting and just solution to the Palestinian cause, it is perfectly achievable to improve the educational environment. Ensuring children access education is not enough - it is equally important to ensure that they receive quality education and gain literacy, numeracy, interactive, social, life and learning skills.
Providing children with a safe, respectful, inclusive, engaging and enriching school environment can and will have a long-lasting impact on their lives and on their communities and country at large.
